I have found a fantastic drum score editor called Aered. Other programs, such as Finale, Sibelius and MuseScore are general-purpose staff notation editors. They are powerful but each are also clumsy when it comes to editing percussion notation. Scores in Aered always look fantastic – I used it on Start Playing Drums and will be using it for my next drum book as well.

It allows users to create drum scores easily, but even better, it has a play function built in. What this means is that if you have trouble figuring out what a particular written figure should sound like, you can plug it into Aered and hit the play button to hear it. The sounds are great, too. You can slow the tempo down in the Settings menu.
